Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 2026

1. Overview

Extreme Sports Fishing Australia ("ESFA", "we", "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains how we collect, use, store, and disclose your personal information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

2. Information We Collect

Information you provide:

  • Account details: name, email address, phone number, profile photo
  • Date of birth and gender (self-declared): used to determine your eligibility for age- and gender-based competition divisions. These are kept private and are never shown on your public profile or to other users.
  • Junior angler details, if you register a child for a junior competition: first name, last initial, age, date of birth and gender, provided by you as the registering parent or guardian — see "Children's Privacy" below.
  • Competition entries: catch photos, location data, species information
  • Social content: posts, comments, reactions
  • Payment information: processed securely through Shopify (we do not store card details)

Information collected automatically:

  • Device information: browser type, operating system, device identifiers
  • Usage data: pages visited, features used, time spent on platform
  • Location data: GPS coordinates when submitting competition entries (with your consent)
  • Cookies and similar technologies for platform functionality and analytics

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your personal information to:

  • Provide and improve our platform and services
  • Process competition entries and verify catches
  • Process purchases and deliver products
  • Send notifications about competitions, results, and platform updates
  • Analyse usage patterns to improve user experience
  • Prevent fraud and ensure fair competition
  • Comply with legal obligations

4. AI Processing

We use artificial intelligence (Google Gemini) to analyse catch photos for species identification and measurement estimation. Photos submitted for AI analysis are processed through Google's API and are subject to Google's data processing terms. AI analysis results are stored on our platform to provide you with catch insights.

5. Information Sharing

We may share your information with:

  • Service providers: Firebase (hosting/authentication), Shopify (payments), Google Cloud (AI processing)
  • Other users: Your public profile, posts, and competition entries are visible to other platform users
  • Legal requirements: When required by law or to protect our rights

We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

6. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored on Firebase (Google Cloud) servers. We implement industry-standard security measures including encryption in transit and at rest, access controls, and regular security audits. While we take reasonable steps to protect your information, no method of electronic storage is 100% secure.

7. Your Rights

Under Australian privacy law, you have the right to:

  • Access your personal information held by us
  • Request correction of inaccurate information
  • Request deletion of your account. We action this by permanently removing your personal identifying details (name, contact details, profile photo) and deleting your social posts. Competition entries and results are kept but de-identified, since they are the official record of a competition outcome — a photo submitted as part of a competition entry may continue to be visible as part of that record.
  • Opt out of marketing communications
  • Lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC)

8. Cookies

We use essential cookies for platform functionality (authentication, cart state) and optional analytics cookies to understand how the platform is used. You can manage cookie preferences through the cookie consent banner displayed on your first visit.

9. Children's Privacy

An ESFA account is for users aged 18 and over. A child does not create their own ESFA account, sign in, or provide information to us directly.

Children can take part in junior competitions (for example, the ESFA Junior Fishing Challenge, for anglers under 16) only through a parent or guardian's own account. The guardian registers the child's details — first name, last initial, age, date of birth and gender — and enters and submits the child's competition entry on their behalf, consenting to their participation. Junior angler details are visible only to the registering guardian; date of birth and gender are used only to confirm competition eligibility and are never published. As with any competition entrant, a junior angler's first name and last initial may appear on a public leaderboard.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes via email or a platform notification. Your continued use of the platform after changes constitutes acceptance.
